Results of the Ideas for Action Kaohsiung Competition

The Jurors

(1) 19 competition works from the 111 works of 14 countries were nominated.
(2) In the third stage of the evaluation the “Video Conferencing” method was adopted to let the jurors speak directly to the competitors via the Internet, by which 3 Outstanding Works and 16 Excellent Works were nominated. The jurors obtained full communication with these competitors in the most economic and sustainable way, for which the jurors believe to be innovative and is worth being reference for future international competitions.
(3) The jurors were invited to visit the World Games Main Stadium, a building based on the “green” concept, the historical sites along the Lotus Pond, and asked the jurors to ride on the West Side Harbor Line Bike Path. The jurors not only experienced the city in person but would also understand the concepts of the competitors’ works better.

The Features of the Outstanding Works

(1) “[ LAB]” is from Taiwan. It employs delicate Blue Circle, Green Ring, and Orange Chain as well as “HUB / TRANSFORMER,” integrating Kaohsiung City’s water and wetland system to control the hot climate of Kaohsiung. It seeks to turn the lands along harbor line into green axis by making the wasted industrial zones cradle to cultural innovative industries and by founding big landscape buildings like Aquariums in the harbor side zone. In Mr. Liu Tou’s imagination and planning, Kaohsiung becomes a dream-endless [ LAB].

(2) The authors of “Canal City” are from Taiwan. It uses Zuoying Caogong Canal as the base of the proposal’s imagination. By dredging the water system and by specially planned waterway design that conforms to the modern society, the proposal turns Caogong Canal into a complete canal network in Kaohsiung. This network plays the transportation, leisure, dredging, irrigation, and tourism function to the fullest, equipping Zuoying’s charm and vision as a Venice in Kaohsiung.

(3) The author of “Migrant workers' breathing edge in Kaohsiung City” from Indonesia uses an immigrant’s viewpoint and discovers that Kaohsiung City has many foreign workers. Thus the proposal seeks to explore the lands released after Kaohsiung Railway Underground Project and turns them into new urban centers of international viewpoint and multi-cultures. The new buildings designed for this zone is adopted from the shape of a Chinese Lantern and hence elevates the proposal’s immigrant culture to a higher international communication level. The Jurors all think that the competition works reach a high level of accomplishment. Many innovative ideas contain feasibility for Kaohsiung City to refer to in the future. We suggest that Kaohsiung continue similar competition or activities to accumulate the results so that it can connect to the world via the Internet and expand online diplomatic territories.

The Promotion Results

(1) We released several hundreds of Kaohsiung photos taken from the air of high resolution and pictures of the tourists’ sites from all 360 angels. These photos are displayed on the competition’s website for the competitors to further understand Kaohsiung. There were visits from more than 100 countries, and young planners from about 1,200 cities from all over the world that took interest in this competition.

(2) We invited the nominated competitors to visit the City, among whom there were people from the US and Indonesia. The nationality shows the competition’s international attraction. It successfully promotes Kaohsiung’s features and local cultures, reaching real diplomacy via the Internet world.

(3) The three Outstanding Works were exhibited in “The Image of Kaohsiung” in INTA33 and won international and domestic attendants’ acclaim.
