Stadslab Master Class Georgia 2010
September - November 2010
Urban Regeneration of Harbor Cities
INTA is collaborating with Stadslab European Urban Design Laboratory on the international Stadslab Master Class in Georgia. The Master
Class will take part in INTA's 34th World Congress in San Sebastian, from 24-28 October 2010.
The Georgian economy has been seriously affected both by the war and its
aftermath (an almost total collapse of trade with Russia) and by the
global economic downturn. Investments in the technical and economic
infrastructure are equally necessary to provide the basis for future
growth. Many factors are strongly in Georgia’s favor for a quick
recovery: its strategic location between commodity rich countries and
Western Europe, an open and attractive business and tax climate,
educated workforce and good relationships both with EU and the USA. Its
beautiful landscape and coasts offer a rich potential for tourism and
access to international trade through the Black Sea.
During the Master Class a number of architects and planners will develop
strategies and design solutions for two strategic corridors in the
Western part of Georgia: a tourism corridor along the subtropical Black
Sea coast, connecting Batumi with Poti, and an industrial corridor
connecting Poti harbor with Tbilisi and further to Central Asia.
International experts will be consulted and results will be
presented at a final conference to the city boards and local and
national stakeholders. Stadslab has a track record of Master Classes
with cities in Poland and Hungary. In 2010 a program is being developed
with Melitopol, Ukraine. Topics vary from regional planning and urban
regeneration, campus city development, cultural strategies to urban
segregation of roma communities (Hungary).
Main features of the Stadslab Master Class in Georgia are:
- SWOT analysis of Black Sea harbor cities;
- Defining strategic corridors;
- Design strategies for waterfront and harbor redevelopment;
- Concepts and branding ideas for zoning and masterplanning;
-
Creating value for citizens, investors and visitors
The concept of the Master Class is a 3 week design workshop (1
week/month in September, October and November) under the supervision of a
group of internationally renowned planners and architects. The Master
Class will include lectures, seminars and design workshops, site visits
to Batumi, Kobuleti, Poti, a visit of the INTA Congress in San
Sebastian-Pasaia (Basque Country) and a final presentation and
conference in Georgia.
The program is being prepared now. Details
expected end of March 2010.
